Planning A Bathroom Renovation

Are you considering a bathroom renovation? If you are selling your home, you’re likely hoping to boost your returns while minimizing any expenses. However, even if you plan to keep your home instead of listing it for sale, there are a lot of advantages to completing a bathroom upgrade. Merit Kitchen and Bath has some suggestions on which tasks to complete first for a smooth flowing project.

Design Your Bathroom

Before you start your project, you must choose what its new design will be. Choose which fixtures you plan to replace. Do you need more storage or less? Plan those changes as well. Select which tiles, paint, and other surface treatments you plan to use in your bathroom. Measure your plumbing and locate your electrical wiring to avoid costly accidents once your project gets underway.

Consider Waste Management Options

There is a lot of waste generated when renovating a bathroom. Small piles of debris may be able to fit in your regular trash, but in general, you will need to rent at least a small dumpster. This will save you time and money in the long run.

Removing Bathroom Fixtures

With a full bathroom renovation, you will want to remove the fixtures before you start tearing down the walls. Make sure to wear protective gear such as safety goggles and a mask. Drain the toilet and turn off the water before breaking down anything connected to plumbing. Next, you will move on to taking out the vanity, fixtures, and mirrors before moving on to the tiles. The very last thing to be removed is the bathroom baseboards. If you plan to reuse them, make sure to work carefully. Damaged subfloors should be replaced before starting new work.

Installing New Tubs & Showers

Now that your room is bare, you can start rebuilding from scratch. Cement boards should go behind the wall where the shower or tub will be placed. Make sure not to forget the waterproofing membrane. This is followed by a new tile and grout, finally your tub or shower.

Paint & Drywall

Install your drywall, cover the seams with tape, fill in missing gaps with drywall mud and then sand the finished walls. After this has been completed, it is time to prime the walls and apply wall treatments. In the end, there will be trim added, so don’t worry about drips along the bottom. Make sure to use mildew resistant paint and not house paint for the bathroom.

New Tiles & Toilet

Mark your floor with chalk lines in 90-degree angles. This will help your tiles lay straight regardless of where you start. Then move on to toilet installation. This should be close to the last step of your bathroom renovation so you can avoid damaging the basin.

Vanity, Lights and Cabinet Install

Your next task is to install the sink, faucet, vanity, and cabinets in your bathroom. Make sure to seal any edges with caulk. Follow up with mirrors and shelving to help round out the bathroom space. Now that you are finished, you can add the trim and go over the bathroom to complete any finishing touches.
